Tyrone "Playa" Glover received his just rewards this week when he was honored by local dignataries for his work as a disc jockey at radio staton KOCZ 103.7 FM in Opelousas. Glover has been a working DJ for four years but it is his latest venture as host of "Playhouse" that has garnered him kudos as a role model for his young listeners and as a community servant. Betty Mitchell, coordinator of the tribute, said that Glover is a tireless worker when it comes to helping the youth of St. Landry Parish. "He has donated school supplies and is currently planning a field trip for area students to New Orleans," said Mitchell. "His good deeds should not go unnoticed." "Playa," as he is known to his listeners, is considered a role model and uses his own life experiences to relay the message that you can make the right or wrong decisions. For the first 18 years of his life, he made all of the right decisions and credits his mother. "Mom did a great job," he said. It was after his 18th birthday that things started to go bad. "I started running with the wrong crowd and ended up being incarcerated," he said. "I knew I needed to change my ways and asked God for help." He also credits his wife and kids for their support. The format of his program, broadcast four days a week, is zydeco, R&B and inspirational music but the message he wants to send to his young listeners is to love life. "I want to spread love through the airwaves," he said. Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow was one of the dignataries present and had this to say about Glover. "I've known Tyrone through the good times and the bad and I applaud and appreciate his service to the community." State Rep. Elbert Guillory was also present at the event. "What a success story," he said. "From a sometimes troubled youth to a full-time community servant, he has made all of us proud." Glover also works full time at the Opelousas Housing Authority where he works with children on a tutoring and mentor program as well as preparing students for their GED exam. His other job - yes, he has three - is that of security guard at Holy Trinity Villa Apartments.
